The 601 Vigilance Committee is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Virginia City, Nevada. We are a community service organization which helps preserve the Comstock heritage and cowboy tradition. One of our community projects this year is to help preserve the historic St. Mary’s Art Center, built in 1875.
Beginning in 2005, St. Mary’s Art Center widened their services to a diverse range of groups beyond the art community and the facility became a unique center in a town celebrated for its rich history, desert landscapes, historic buildings, and exciting characters. The Center hosts events to educate children about the Comstock heritage and cowboy tradition and introduce them to the arts. The 601 currently supports a program with St. Mary’s Art Center to furnish art supplies for the children visiting the Center to express themselves in their paintings of historic buildings and landscape visible from the center. The 601 Vigilance Committee will also be supporting the performing arts for children through the Piper Opera House and Virginia City, Nevada schools.
