The Mike Magyar Fine Arts-Leadership Award has been established to recognize students who have displayed a dedication to Central Methodist University while sharing their leadership qualities, time, and talents in the fine and performing arts.

This mid-tenure award will be granted to a junior advancing to his or her senior year. The recipient of this award must  demonstrate financial need. The recipient must demonstrate unprompted initiative and sound leadership qualities in some capacity during his or her tenure at CMU.  This person need not be in pursuit of a major in the field of the fine and performing arts, but must have been involved in the music, art, or theater programs and/or productions at CMU – preferably, in a leadership role.  The award will always be presented directly to the student by a member of the Magyar family in honor of Mike.  A perpetual plaque has been provided to the University for display.   In addition, there will be a separate plaque for those who donate $500 or more to the endowment award.

Those who qualify for this award are indeed special and exemplify the qualities of an extraordinary man.  Mike was a singer of songs, a lover of music, a humorist, a businessman extraordinaire, and most of all, a man of many friends who will retain his vivid memory forever in their lives.

Mike left this world too soon at the age of 46.  He attended Central Methodist University and graduated in May, 1989.  He married the love of his life who was also a Central Methodist alumni, Jean Elizabeth Jewett, and they had two children, Austin  Magyar and Bailey Magyar.  Austin Magyar is a Central Methodist Alumni, who graduated in December, 2013.  Mike’s family meant everything to him and he worked diligently all of his life to make sure they were well taken care of.

Mike was a man of integrity.  He was an individual who could be trusted because he never veered from inner values, even when it might be favorable to him.  He always put the other guy first.  He was dedicated to spending whatever time or energy necessary to accomplish the task at hand.  Mike was a man who set an example of success for others to follow.

Mike was always open to listening to new ideas, even if they did not conform to the usual way of thinking.  A magnanimous leader, he ensured that credit for successes was spread widely among those with whom he worked.  Conversely, he took personal responsibility for failures.  His humility allowed other members of his team to realize his equality and fairness.

Mike Magyar was an assertive individual who had the ability to clearly state what he expected so there would be no misunderstandings.  He had the ability to strike with just the right amount of intensity or forces to get the desired results.  This was all done with a great sense of humor that relieved the tension and the boredom, as well as the ability to defuse hostility.  He had a talent for energizing his followers and producing camaraderie.

We want to value Mike's dedication to the importance of an education and continue to grow amazing leaders.
