Drew was born on July 18, 2014, at Texas Children's
Hospital in Houston. We made the
decision to deliver at the world-class center after prenatal screening
discovered Drew had several severe congenital defects. Suffering from both Congenital Diaphragmatic
Hernia and Complete AV Canal Defect meant Drew would have severe lung and heart
issues that would require many surgeries.
The outlook was so bleak that doctors couldn't even give Drew a
percentage chance of survival.
After Drew was born, he survived three surgeries in his
first five days of life. He spent the
next four months in the NICU recovering and growing while awaiting heart
surgery. On November 11, Drew's AV Canal
defect was repaired and appeared to be on his road to recovery. One week later, Drew's conditioned worsened
and had to go back in for a second heart surgery in 13 days.
After one month of recovering in the CVICU, Drew returned
to the NICU to continue his care. We
recently received the news we have waited seven moths to hear: We are going
home! Drew is scheduled to be discharged
from TCH Monday, February 16 to continue his care in Baton Rouge. We will remain in Houston for one week to
help ensure a smooth transition before driving back to Baton Rouge February 23.
Once we are home, we face a different set of
challenges. There will be doctors
appointments, therapies, home medical supplies, medicines and more. That burden is light, though, considering we
will be bringing Drew home with us. We
continue to be humbled by the love and support for our precious son.
Sincerely,
Matt, Erika and Drew Moscona
