The Plan

The overall goal of this course is for students to create a deeper understanding of how previous generations of Americans have interacted with the environment.

To accomplish this goal and to fulfill the experiential and intensive requirements of an x-term, we will be dividing our time into two parts: visiting and interacting with historical sites and national landmarks and by creating a final project. This can take the form of a paper, a work of art, or a presentation.

With your help, we hope to travel to Flagstaff, AZ. Once there, we will visit natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest and discuss their historical significance as well as environmental issues that affect them. We also plan to visit museums with exhibits about the region. During our time in Arizona, we will participate in student-led discussions about what we we found interesting and decide on a topic for our final project.

Once back in Cleveland, we will get to work on our individual projects. We will be taking full advantage of the resources available to us, such as the Cleveland History Center, Case Western Reserve University's Kelvin Smith Library, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. We will also take some time to look into local history and compare it to what we learned during our time in Arizona.

FAQ

1) What is an x-term?

An x-term is a two-week intensive at the end of the MHS school year where students are expected to group up and learn about a common interest. The x-term curriculum is entirely planned, funded, and executed by the students involved (no teachers allowed!). The curriculum is founded upon the idea of experiential learning: x-terms give us a chance to step outside the classroom to learn and immerse ourselves in the big, beautiful world.

2) When does this all happen?

The x-term starts on Monday, the 23rd of May 2016 and ends on Friday, the 3rd of June.
