Spence Dalton is an Oconee County Fire and Rescue volunteer that was injured while on-duty on the night of June 6th.  He was hit by a car as he worked a fallen tree situation on Georgia State Highway 316 and is still recovering from numerous injuries.  Doctors have told him that his recovery period could take up to 6 months.

Spence has a list of injuries that cover him from head to toe:
- Nose broken in 3 places & nearly ripped off - will require extensive surgery
- Torn Labrum in his shoulder - hopeful that PT will resolve
- Torn Meniscus and bone chips under the knee - surgery done and now healing
- Fractured Pelvis
- Some type of Ankle injury that can't be treated until knee and pelvis have healed
- Neck and Head issues are still being evaluated

Spence and Haley are both self-employed and will be out of work for a while.

Spence is wanting to raise awareness of the importance of drivers moving over when they see flashing emergency lights on the side of the road or in the road.  Despite an Oconee County sheriff’s deputy unit with blue lights flashing and Dalton’s fire emergency vehicle with red lights flashing, authorities said a car did not move over for the emergency vehicles as required by law.

“It’s a nationwide problem. People are not moving over the way they should and just not paying attention to what is going on,” Spence said. “It’s a real danger today, not only here but between here and Atlanta with all the traffic.  I want to raise awareness to the "move over" law and don’t want this to happen to other first responders."

Spence remains grateful for the warning that Decoda White of Watkinsville and Robert Derivan of Loganville shouted that night, giving him a chance to move out of a direct hit by the car.  White and Derivan were attempting to move the tree, when Spence arrived in his emergency vehicle. Dalton was at the location only a short time when White said they saw a car approaching and they shouted the warning.  “He came through the tree and hit Spence,” White said, adding that the Chrysler 300 stopped momentarily at the end of the ramp, then began driving off.   “Rob looked up and saw he was taking off so he hopped in my truck and chased him down,” White said.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated and charged a 28-year-old Athens man with failing to report an accident, failing to return to the scene of an accident, failing to yield to emergency vehicles and having an open container of alcohol. Dalton was transported to an Athens hospital with broken bones in his nose, facial wounds and injuries to his foot, knee, back and hip.
