On the 17th of October 2014 our son, Bradley and three of his friends embarked on a holiday to Queensland that has changed our lives forever.
Never did I expect to receive that dreaded call the following Week........Brads best mate, Thomas, crying down the phone "Brad was just floating and wouldn't wake up". Me at home in Perth not knowing what was happening. The type of call no parent ever wants to receive. The boys had been surfing when he was wiped-out out by a huge wave and Brad was being airlifted from North Stradbroke to Brisbane, still unconscious & with suspected spinal injury
After a gruelling 18 hours my husband and I finally arrived at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. We were told that Brad had hit a sandbank instantly breaking his neck. A freak accident that in only seconds would change his life forever. After hours of surgery, the outcome was bleak and our boy was rendered a quadriplegic. This has left Brad unable to use his hands to perform daily tasks and other than partial movement in his arms, he is left paralyzed from the neck down.
The past 4 months have proved to be testing, though he has remained determined, positive and kept a smile on his face. He has learnt to breathe without a ventilator and eat on his own again and his Dr has told us that he is only a month or two away from being able to return home, back to Perth,
The costs involved for the near future will be mammoth to say the least. Health insurance has been a godsend, and we are very lucky this covered both hospital and rehabilitation costs. We now have to get our home ready for Brads return which is a big job, but nothing compared to the milestones that Brad has reached already.
