I am Akira's mother, Valli Slater. Akira, now 3.5 years old, started life with an unknown genetic disorder. However, I didn't know this until recently. She had terrible reflux from birth which caused her immense pain. She never slept well. She was a floppy baby who refused food. She has never eaten anything except yoghurt and some pureed fruit and vegetables. She still drinks infant formula at a cost of $100 per week and uses nappies. Her basic care has proved costly and I am her full time carer. She has never spoken. She has always had development delay.

I returned to work part time when Akira was 1 year old. But she suffered in day care as nobody understood her and her needs were neglected. I would pick her up and she had spent much of the day crying or she would be sitting in a corner by herself. It didn't take me long to decide that I had to resign from my job in Darwin and get Akira to Brisbane to get the medical help she needed. At this stage, she was diagnosed with Global Development Delay. A diagnosis that didn't explain her abnormal behaviour.

In 2015, after moving to Brisbane and getting Akira into the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital, she was diagnosed with autism. This explained her ritualistic behaviour. Then a few months later Akira started dropping to the ground, face first. She was diagnosed with a rare, severe form of epilepsy with negative myoclonus seizures. It is difficult to control her seizures with medication.

I now know the development delay, autism and epilepsy are merely symptoms of an underlying genetic disorder. I am waiting for the results of genetic tests to see if she has Angelman, Rett or Pitt Hopkins syndrome.

Some animals like dogs and horses are able to form meaningful relationships with children with disabilities. An assistance dog can comfort Akira when she is sick, in hospital and at home. The dog can go to school with her and sleep with her. The dog will be therapeutic for a sick child like Akira. Akira loves dogs and her assistance dog will improve her quality of life.

An assistance dog will complete our family. Akira doesn't talk now and might not ever talk so she needs all the comfort and protection she can get. Life hasn't been kind to her but I will never ever leave her side.
