Heart of Missouri Girls on the Runis a positive youth empowerment program that integrates physical activity with lessons that build character and leadership in young girls in grades 3-5 and 6-8. Using an outcomes based curriculum, girls engage in activities that teach them how to appreciate themselves and others and how to deter and deal with bullying, negative body image, gossip and other common problems faced by girls of this age. We creatively integrate running as part of our program to help girls develop a healthy sense of body, mind and spirit and as they progress through the 10 week program they train toward running a celebration 5k.
This non-competitive 5k event allows girls to celebrate their accomplishments from the season and provides them the opportunity to achieve a goal they've been working toward over the 10 week period. During the 5k many of the character building traits examined and discussed during the season's lessons are practiced by the girls participating. These include competence, confidence, connection, character, caring and contribution. During the spring 2016 5k these very traits were reflected in the courage, confidence, commitment and character exhibited by one of the participants and the caring, compassion and contribution made by her teammates. Liz began Girls on the Run a little shy and reluctant to participate in the running portion of the program. Through the season she began to blossom in both areas, contributing to group discussions and engaging in the practice runs more enthusiastically. When she arrived for the 5k she had one goal in mind - to complete the race. And complete the race she did! After all of the other girls had crossed the finish line Liz was still on the course, committed to finishing. About an 1/8 of a mile from the finish line her teammates spotted her and several of them ran out to meet her. Together, Liz and her teammates finished the race! This show of commitment, confidence, competence compassion, caring and contribution illustrates what Girls on the Run is all about! Girls believing themselves and supporting one another!
