The 601 Vigilance Committee is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Virginia City, Nevada. We are a community service organization which helps preserve the Comstock heritage and cowboy tradition.  It’s membership represents all five branches of the United States military services from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, conflicts and current and retired law enforcement.  The 601 supports several annual projects to help preserve historical structures.  We also support art projects for children and local museums to help educate visitors and children on the Comstock and rich history of the region.  In the last year the 601 Vigilance Committee has assisted the Virginia City Cemetery, St Mary’s Art Center, the Silver State National Peace Officers Museum, the Fireman’s Museum, local churches for restoration and the “Let Them Run” Foundation supporting wild horses to name a few.  Please help us continue the great work.

More information regarding the 601 Vigilance Committee is available at http://601vigilancecommittee.org.

Comstock History

Virginia City sprang up as a boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovery in the United States, with numerous mines opening.   At the city's peak of population in the mid-1870s, it had an estimated 25,000 residents. By 1876 Nevada produced over half of all the precious metals in the United States. The Comstock produced silver and gold ore valued at millions of dollars.

Virginia City retains an authentic historic character with board sidewalks, and numerous restored buildings dating to the 1860s and 70s. Virginia City is home to many charming and informative museums. Virginia City was declared a National Historic Landmark district in 1961, and has been carefully preserved to retain its historic character.
