Picture this: A tiny, beaten up vehicle powers along a sandy road in the middle of nowhere. The 4 adults squeezed inside have been slowly making progress on their trip across the world now for a little over a month. It's 40 degrees outside, but feels like 1000 in the car. The group of travellers are sporting a semi-permanent coating of dust and hope, and are suffering from serious vegemite deprivation. The tiny car splutters and stalls for the 5th time this week, and the travellers find themselves doing the Fred Flintstone once again.
Well, why on earth would they do that, you ask?!
Charity, of course!
As of July the 4th 2017, four brave (okay and maybe a tad deranged) aussies known as Ashton, Bronte, Zoe and Sam will be embarking on the adventure of a lifetime to raise money for two charities; Cool Earth and SolarAid.
We will be driving our death trap of a car from London through Europe, Turkey, Armenia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia.
"SolarAid is an international charity that combats poverty and climate change. We provide access to solar lights in some of the most remote regions of Malawi, Uganda and Zambia through our social enterprise, SunnyMoney.
598 million people in Africa alone have no access to electricity. Without electricity families have no clean source of light... many use homemade kerosene lamps which are a poor source of light; they emit toxic black smoke, eat up to 15% of a family’s income and are extremely hazardous.
With a solar light, everything changes. These little lamps are safe, clean and affordable. They give off hours of light in the evening so families can earn, learn and feel safe after dark. Just one lamp can transform the fortunes of an entire family and is the first step on an energy ladder to full electrification."
