We're a group of high school students who want to know more about how things are made.

The Plan

The overall goal of this intensive is to allow for each student to learn more about the business and practice of design.

In order to take fully advantage of the experiential and intensive nature of the "x-term", we will be accomplishing our goal in two ways: by visiting and talking with experts and by creating our own art projects.

Hopefully, we will be able to immerse ourselves in two artistic hubs in the United States: NYC and CLE.

In New York, we will be visiting different people and firms specialized in a range of different fields of design (from web dev and graphics to paint and clay). The travel aspect will give us the opportunity to talk to experts who work in the field every day, visit different art facilities (design firms, renowned museums, etc.), and take part in different activities that will further enrich our understanding of different forms of art.

Back home at Cleveland, we will be both working on our own independent art projects and also meeting with people who work in art and design here. We are working on getting a few people to come and talk to us about product design and invention, making glass, creating 3D models, and more. We will also be able to take advantage of academic luxuries in University Circle, like the Cleveland Museum of Art and the think[box] facility at Case Western Reserve University.

We will be working in the art department at our school (MHS at UC) which is equipped with all the necessary art supplies to work on our own projects (including two 3D printers!)

FAQ

1) What is an x-term?

An x-term is a two-week intensive at the end of the MHS school year where students are expected to group up and learn about a common interest. The x-term curriculum is entirely planned, funded, and executed by the students involved (no teachers allowed!). The curriculum is founded upon the idea of experiential learning: x-terms give us a chance to step outside the classroom to learn and immerse ourselves in the big, beautiful world.

2) How will the money be spent?

Most of the money will go to travel and residence. We will also need some money set aside for transportation, food, and miscellaneous expenses (both in NYC and CLE).

3) When does this all happen?

The x-term starts on Tuesday, the 26th of May 2015 and ends on Friday, the 5th of June. We expect to be out of town in New York starting the 26th of May.
