It is seemingly with unfortunate regularity of late, the use of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) are in the news. On a national level the news of an AED saving the life of Bob Harper, a celebrity fitness trainer, while he suffered a heart attack at his gym. And locally, CrossFit Proven had a member suffer a sudden cardiac arrest as he was getting ready to start his workout last week. Luckily CrossFit Proven’s coaching team and members acted fast and brought Jim back to life thanks to CPR techniques and the use of the AED.
With all that said, CrossFit Apex will be purchasing an AED unit, and offer CPR and AED training for not only all coaches, but any member that wishes to take the training. The cost of the AED, along with training and on-going cost are not minuscule. To help defray these initial costs, there will be an Apex On-line Raffle where you can pay for a chance to win various prizes donated by Apex Members.

An estimated 300,000 Americans suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually, with 20 percent occurring in public places, according to a 2012 study by University of Pennsylvania researchers. Survival rates for victims who don’t get immediate help are a dismal 6 percent, but those who quickly get CPR and defibrillation can increase their chances to 50 percent.
