Clayoquot Cleanup is an organization dedicated to restoring our coastline. More than just removing regular household garbage and small marine debris, our goal is to remove and recycle all debris, particularly that which cannot be packed out in a day pack alone. All funds from the raffle go towards marine-debris removal in Clayoquot Sound to help keep our waterways clean! www.clayoquotcleanup.com @clayoquotcleanup
Our first endeavour this June in Hesquiaht Harbour was a huge success and included: Over 30,000 water bottles removed 30 km continuous coastline cleaned 70 sets of helping hands 14 days Photo: Mirae Campbell Clayoquot Sound plays host to an ecologically rich ecosystem that is suffering from the impact of marine debris. Home to First Nations communities, the District of Tofino, a plethora of visitors, part time residents and colorful characters, the biodiversity of our landscape is mirrored closely by the diversity of its human inhabitants. Drawing from this diversity and the reliance we have upon the industries of fishing and aquaculture, eco-tourism, and other tourism based services, it isn’t a difficult correlation to link the healthy landscapes and wildlife to sustainable economic growth and development.
Due to the location of Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island, its coast and waterways act as debris aggregator from both national and international sources. From drifting longlines to sunken crabtraps, cetaceans and other marine mammals combat entanglement as a way of life - cetaceans perish in lost fishing gear, birds choke on plastics mistaken for food - and the ecosystem integrity as a whole declines. To date, marine debris removal projects have not focused on these remote areas - and this is where Clayoquot CleanUp can make a difference, by implementing a marine debris removal program to properly maintain that rich balance of biology and economy in Clayoquot Sound.
