The Junior School Leaders at Charlton Christian College are heading to Safe Haven in Manilla (Philippines) on a mission trip on September 23rd. The 6 children attending are currently in Year 4 at CCC, and are only 9-10 years of age. Through fundraising, toy sales and donations, we will be helping to make a difference in the lives of some of the poorest and most impoverished children that live in abhorrent conditions of squalor and disease.
We will be spending a week there engaging with the children that live at Safe Haven, an orphanage run by fellow Christian's Dave and Cherie Snellgrove. The Snellgrove family had lived and worked in the Philippines in 2008-2009 alongside the staff and administrators of a small private schoolthat provides high quality Christian education to children in impoverished circumstances in Quezon City.
On their return to Australia, David and Cherie desired to do more for those families struggling with the hopelessness of poverty. The Snellgroves were particularly drawn to Payatas Dumpsite and the desperate needs of those children and families living in the midst of mountains of rubbish that surround them. It soon became apparent to both David and Cherie that there was an obvious need for a safe place for those children who were neglected and abandoned, or for those children whose families were temporarily unable to care for their needs due to extreme hardship.
