ABOUT ZUMBADOR:
Origin: Our selected farms are in the High Mountain areas of the Cordillera Central of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, crop 2016. Quantity: Current crop is under 2,000 bags of 100 lbs (45.36Kg.), each prepared with food grade plastic inner protective bag inside branded jute bag.
crop: 15/16
Varieties: We specialize in old-style varietals such as Borbon and Porto Rico (Typica 401) to form the core of our base. Modern varieties have been introduced for heartiness and weather reliance.
Soils:Our farms are blessed with volcanic, clay based soils which provide great drainage. and rich nutrients for the coffee trees.
Quality: Zumbador is produced in small lots of less than 40 bags per. The quality surpasses SCAA Grade 1 washed arabica standards. All lots must meet cup standards to carry the Zumbador name. Beans are selected by size (screen 16+) and appearance with stringent quality controls.
ZUMBADOR is grown in the most protective environmental, labor, and social conditions in the coffee world.
As a United States territory, Puerto Rico is subject to the most protective environment in the coffee market. Some of the benefits of this are:
For our workers and their families:
• Every worker earns the US minimum wage ($7.25/hr.) or more.
• Only adults work. Our children go to free public school by law.
* Education is constitutionally guaranteed. University studies are accessible to all who graduate high school via U.S. grants and scholarships.
• Health care is subsidized and free for low income people (MEDICARE).
• Workers are eligible for U.S. social security upon retirement or disability.
• OSHA workplace protection regulations are in place to secure safety at work.
•Coffee pickers are not taxed on their income.
• Lower wage earners can qualify for food subsidies from the USDA.
• Public housing is available via local and federal assistance programs.
For the environment
• Water purity is protected and regulated by the EPA.
• Pest controls are limited and regulated by local and federal government. Use of natural products is promoted first.
• Erosion control programs are in place
• Forest and river protection is an integral part of farm planning.
