Hi! My name is Lucy Martin and this year I have accepted the challenge of participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year campaign as a member of Team Care, led by my very good friend and neighbor Caroline Borrello whom I have known since the 4th grade. For more than 60 years, LLS has invested over $1 billion to advance cancer therapies and save lives. LLS has been relentless in the pursuit of its mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Critical treatment innovations have originated through blood cancer research - radiation, chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and new targeted immunotherapies. From 2000 – 2013, nearly 40% of all FDA approved cancer drugs were for blood cancer. Many are now treating or being tested to treat prostate, breast and pancreatic cancers.
The reason I am participating in this campaign is because I have a very personal connection with cancer. Growing up, both my mom and grandmother were diagnosed with cancer. My mom had uterine cancer and my grandmother had breast cancer. We also have close family friends currently battling blood cancers. Watching the obstacles they had to overcome made me eager to fund raise and help other people fighting similar battles.
I asked my mom (who has painted for local charities for the past 5 years) for help. She agreed to paint a painting for this raffle. It's called "Salt Marsh" and is 11x14 acrylic painting on canvas.
My personal goal is to raise at least $5,000 between January 17 and March 8, 2019 for LLS so we can all help save other lives. Please help me to achieve my goal of seeing a day when fathers, sons, daughters, and mothers are not lost to these dreaded diseases.
Thank you in advance for joining in what is truly a live-saving effort!
