Welcome to A Place for Jacob. My son Jacob is twenty-four years old. He has an Autism and Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) diagnosis.

Jacob was born to us when we were in our late 30's. We are trying to plan for Jacob when we are no longer here or able to care for him.

We were not happy with the fact that if something happens- Jacob would be stuck in the first place with an opening. Even in school, Jacob's placements rarely seemed appropriate. We do not want him to just be shoved in with people with differing diagnoses where he will be unhappy and probably have behavior issues. It became our goal to open a home for Jacob. Instead of trying to push Jacob in somewhere that he does not fit- why not design a home around his needs and a couple of his peers of similar functioning levels?

Parents really should have some say as to where our Autistic adults end up living.

 

Mission: A Place for Jacob is a safe place for Jacob and others to live a fulfilling life in a supportive, accepting environment.

 

Vision: We envision an environment where our residents can live a productive life in a home- like setting, participate in activities of daily living within the home, and individual and group activities in the community.

Enhancement: The resident’s lives will be enhanced due to being accepted as individuals and by having the opportunity to develop family like relationships with each other.

 

Security: Residents would have a sense of security and belonging in their own home.

 

Productivity: Residents will be encouraged to participate in activities of daily living such as laundry, cooking, cleaning up, etc. They will also be able to participate in day programs, customized employment or individual jobs in the community that are appropriate to their skill levels.

 

Confidence: Residents will develop confidence in themselves by learning skills to maintain their home, by building relationships with each other and staff, and by interacting in programs and activities in the community.
