WHY AM I DOING THIS?
In a week I will be traveling to Belarus to volunteer at Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum. Over 170 children call this place ‘home’ since their lives have been affected by an event that happened back in the 1980s.
CHERNOBYL HISTORYOn April 26th, 1986 at 1:23AM the world changed forever when Reactor 4 at the
Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine exploded. This explosion released over 400 times the amount of radiation that was released in the Hiroshima bombing and 50% of the radionuclides were dispersed eventually around the planet. This has negatively affected millions of people – especially children. Children are more at risk because they receive 5-6 times more radioactivity than adults due to smaller weight, height, and a more active metabolism. Adi Roche founded CCI on receipt of a fax message which read –
‘SOS appeal. For God’s sake help us to get the children out’.
CHERNOBYL CHILDREN INTERNATIONAL
CCI was formally founded in 1991 in an effort to help alleviate the suffering and to offer hope to those most affected by the explosion, namely the children of Belarus, Western Russia, and the Ukraine. It is CCI’s long-term objective to be able to fully support family and community-based care, in order to provide the best outcome for the
children and young adults within Vesnova. I hope my time volunteering will positively impact the children and young adults in some way. “Our generation has the ability and the responsibility to make our ever-more connected world a more hopeful, stable and peaceful place.” — Natalie Portman.
