In just over a month I am heading to volunteer at an orphanage in Belarus with a group of 15, alongside Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children International. We are currently raising money for this trip, where our jobs are to bring smiles and spend quality one-on-one time with the 170 children who call this orphanage "home". Money raised will be used where it is most needed for the children, including critical items, medical care, and fun items such as hair elastics, bracelets, cars, building blocks, etc.
In the Chernobyl regions there are hundreds of orphanages and institutions where thousands of children live lonely forgotten lives. Chernobyl Children International works to support children in institutions across Belarus to regain their right to a family life and to end the institutionalization of children in conjunction with Belarusian authorities.
The Chernobyl disaster happened in 1986, and children born in Belarus since then are affected by a 200% increase in birth defects and a 250% increase in congenital birth deformities.
