ADDED BENEFIT #2: The value of the prize will be treated as ordinary income to the winner for federal and state income tax purposes. However, as an added benefit Historic Newton will cover both the Federal and State taxes owed on the value of the prize!

The cost of each ticket is $100. Proceeds from this raffle will directly support the efforts of Historic Newton, the historical society of Newton, Massachusetts, with a mission to connect our community with its history in order to enrich future generations.

Historic Newton wants to send you on an historic journey to Memphis!

RULES, REGULATIONS, AND DISCLOSURES

1. One raffle ticket holder (the “winner”) will be selected randomly via drawing to receive the following prize package*:
  • Round-trip coach class airfare for 2 to Memphis, Tennessee, from any major metropolitan airport in the 48 contiguous U.S.
  • 3-night stay at the Peabody Hotel downtown Memphis.
  • Admission and a guided tour for 2 at the National Civil Rights Museum. 
  • Admission and a guided tour for 2 at the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.
  • Admission and a guided tour for 2 at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
  • Dinner for 2 at Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous BBQ. 
  • Booking & concierge service provided by Winspire.
*The winner will have up to 2 years from the selection date to redeem the prize package. Museum admission and tours subject to museum standard operating hours and staff availability on date(s) of attendance. Blackout dates for airline travel may apply.

2. The appraised value of the prize package is $3150.00.

3. The maximum number of raffle tickets that will be sold is 100. There is no minimum number of tickets that must be sold. Each ticket will be given equal opportunity to be selected to win the raffle.

4. The cost of each ticket is $100. Ticket purchasers may purchase multiple tickets.

5. Each ticket purchased will come with a coupon redeemable for a complimentary, signed copy of "Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.‘s Last 31 Hours," by author Joseph Rosenbloom, from Historic Newton’s Museum Store. Ticket holders who are residents of Massachusetts will have their copies available for in-person pickup at Jackson Homestead and Museum, 527 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02458. Residents from outside of Massachusetts will have their copies shipped via UPS to the address provided during the purchase of the ticket(s).

6. The value of the prize will be treated as ordinary income to the winner for purposes of federal and state income tax purposes. Historic Newton shall pay to the Internal Revenue Service and State Tax Collector any income taxes due on the winnings, meaning that the winner will not have to pay with their own money any of the taxes due.

7. The Internal Revenue Service takes the position that no portion of the ticket price qualifies as a charitable contribution for federal income purposes.

8. The selection of a winner will be made via drawing, broadcast live via Historic Newton’s Facebook page, on June 1, 2021.

9. All proceeds from ticket sales will be used for charitable purposes, regardless of how many tickets are sold, for the purpose of funding Historic Newton’s programs and general operations.

10. The Massachusetts Attorney General's Guidance on the conduct of raffles excludes certain persons from purchasing raffle tickets. The following groups are ineligible to purchase raffle tickets:

  • Staff members of Historic Newton may not purchase raffle tickets.
  • Board members and Trustees of Historic Newton may not purchase raffle tickets.
  • Representatives of the underwriting organizations through whose generosity Historic Newton has been able to promote this raffle (LDa, The...underwriting raffle sponsor companies (LDa, The Matt Montgomery Group, Youngblood Builders, Erin Gates Design) may not purchase raffle tickets.
  • Spouses, dependent children, parents, brothers and sisters and their spouses of the groups listed above may not purchase tickets.
Please note: children and their respective spouses of the groups listed above, living independently and not in the household of a prohibited purchaser, may buy tickets.

11. Purchasers of raffle tickets must be 21 years of age or older, and must be residents of the United States.

12. Depositing ticket receipts or any other material in connection with the raffle in the federal mails is a violation of federal law and may lead to criminal penalties so please communicate with Historic Newton with any inquiries about the raffle by phone (617-796-1450) or email ([email protected]).
