Fibonacci Trip. Getty Quilt Raffle, 2024. Front.
This year the Getty Sew & Sews celebrate 21 years of philanthropy with the PST ART: Art & Science Collide inspired quilt Fibonacci Trip. The mathematically influenced quilt was handcrafted by GSS members Evette Allahverdian, Paula Carlson, Margaret Combs-Brookes, Nancy Enneking, Theresa Marino, Ronel Namde, Melissa Piper, Wendy Radford, Rosio Torres, and Tanya Wilson. And, Patricia Araque and others took on a multitude of demanding administrative tasks to organize the 2024 Getty Quilt Raffle.
Divided between two special service organizations:
The Westside Food Bank and
Sojourn Services, the cash proceeds from the Getty Sew & Sews Quilt Raffles have totaled over $55,700 as of 2023. 100% of our net proceeds is given to benefit these two important organizations, which provide much needed assistance to our local community. In her letter of appreciation, Genevieve Riutort, President and CEO of the Westside Food Bank wrote:
“Amid a post-pandemic hunger crisis [you] rose to the occasion…Our community needs support, and you made a difference by donating [proceeds] from the 2023 Quilt Raffle…Thank you for your generous gift! We appreciate your support to continue our lifesaving mission to end hunger.” Because of the growing needs of these service organizations, the Getty Sew & Sews have been enthusiastically crafting and raffling off their fundraising quilts since early 2003. What started as a group of Getty staff gathering at lunchtime to learn quilting evolved quickly into a passionate annual fundraising effort to give back to our community.
In February 2024, the GSS gathered—with many new members—to decide the design theme of the annual quilt. As PST ART: Art & Science Collide was beginning to gain momentum, the GSS decided that a nod to math and science, and the lively PST color palette, would be an interesting direction: it turns out the Fibonacci ratio sequence and quilting were made for each other! Measuring 56 x 76 inches, Fibonacci Trip is constructed of over 1,260 individual pieces of 100% cotton fabrics. The brightly colored front features thirty-five large blocks, each constructed of two contrasting color sets of pieces in the Fibonacci measured sequence of .5, .5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.0 inches.
The Getty Sew & Sews would like to dedicate this quilt to our friend who donated hundreds of yards of fabrics over the years, longtime Getty Volunteer, Mr. John Landau, who passed away earlier this year, and his dear wife Norma. We also thank the Getty Staff and Volunteers for their generous giving spirit, making possible The 2024 Getty Quilt Raffle.
