Statement from The Artist: Lori Love
As a mixed media artist, I’ve always experimented with non-traditional mediums that can be transformed and or elevated to create a new visual experience and since 2013, no material has inspired me more than vinyl records.
My artistic journey creating with vinyl began four years ago by pure luck and circumstance. At the time, it was late July in North Carolina and the weather was brutally hot. I happened to make a trip to a local flea market where a local second hand music vendor was selling 45’s and LP’s to those hardcore music lovers who still listened to records. As I was sifting through the boxes of vinyl, I noticed that many of the records would never make it to a turntable as the heat had managed to melt and warp them into an unplayable state. At that moment I decided I would rescue these pieces of musical “art “and give them a second life in the visual realm.
My Vinyl Icon’s series, while inspired by other Pop Artists and my love for music, also derives inspiration from the vinyl itself and its transformative properties but also its ability to reflect light and its texture. More recently I have applied similar techniques to other mass produced “art” forms such as CD’s, DVD’s and VHS tape, weaving all together to create a unique piece of iconography. My goal is to inspire others to not only look at the icon but to also look at mass produced “art” as still vital and worthy of a second life contrary to its intended form. Transforming auditory art into a visual icon. In the words of John Lennon, “Imagine.”
My work may be found in numerous private collections across the US and abroad and most recently in the Corporate collection of Live Nation and The AC Hotel.
