The annual NYS Dental Foundation 50/50 raffle is one way in which we give back to those organizations throughout New York State which are doing the heavy lifting in order to improve access to oral health care for vulnerable populations.

This year’s 50/50 raffle recipient, selected by NYSDA President Dr. Craig Ratner, is Project Accessible Oral Health, led by the Viscardi Center, a public-private partnership that seeks to raise awareness of the need to improve oral healthcare to adults and children with disabilities and increase access to quality oral healthcare for the disability community.

The drawing will be held Saturday, 14 August, at the end of the NYSDA House of Delegates Annual Session.

Winners need not be present to win. Must be over 18 years old to purchase a ticket.

The Prize

  • 50/50

The winner of the event will receive 50% of the funds raised.

PROJECT ACCESSIBLE ORAL HEALTH (PAOH)  will receive the other 50%.

The Viscardi Center provides  a comprehensive portfolio of services that educate, employ and empower more than 2,000 youth and adults with disabilities a year to lead successful, independent lives.

Project Accessible Oral Health (PAOH), led by The Viscardi Center, is a public-private partnership that seeks to raise awareness of the need to improve oral healthcare to adults and children with disabilities and increase access to quality oral healthcare for the disability community (one in five Americans have a disability).

PAOH is the first national nonprofit to assemble and connect a consortium of dental and medical professionals, corporations, organizations, policymakers, educators, people with disabilities and other stakeholders in pursuit of access to quality oral healthcare.  The Project’s mission is to act a collective catalyst for change that will improve access to competent oral healthcare and ultimately improve the overall health of the disability community.

Our goals are to raise awareness about the critical role that oral health plays in the overall health of people with disabilities and bring together stakeholders from a range of sectors to create a network of care and advocacy for the disabilities community.  Through the PAOH annual meetings, as well as smaller events, current and future providers have begun to understand the complex needs of people with disabilities and be better prepared to serve them and educate them properly.

An exciting result of the first PAOH annual meeting was that an attendee, Dr. Larry Paul, Vice President of Dental Health Programs at AmeriHealth Caritas, heard about the issue of oral health and people with disabilities and took it to his company.  AmeriHealth Caritas is now the first insurance company to create a new special needs reimbursement model.

A few of our major educational partners in this initiative are the University of Pennsylvania, NYU School of Dentistry, Temple University Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry, and Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. These educational partners are training students to be better equipped to treat people with disabilities.
