This year, the Kalitta Air Employee Assistance Program decided to have a little fun with fundraising, and raffle a beautiful airplane! This C182A has been well-maintained with a complete set of time-capsule logs, very low times, a brand-new interior, fresh annual and sparkling new paint job in the spirit of Kalitta Air, but in a classic Cessna-type design. There will be some minor upgrades, and these, along with pictures of the progress, will be available on the Facebook page (Kalitta Air Employee Assistance Program), as well as the website.
In the finest of Kalitta Air traditions, the airplane is named after a prolific human being who changed the lives of everyone he met - Cheynne Todd. I first met Cheynne in George, South Africa, while learning to fly. Over the years I spent there, we became close friends, and I would see him often at family gatherings and occasionally at the pub! Cheynne spent way too much time in the hospital for the bright lad that he was, and one such day, called me to skip work and play cards with him. While we played, I had expressed to him that I was miserable with my career choice, and I thought myself a failure since I was unable to move on from the flying school. Cheynne perked me up, told me I’m being ridiculous, and said that one day, I would be flying big metal for money and have my own little plane for fun - I didn’t know it, but boy, was he right! Cheynne’s earth light was extinguished far too early in 2006, and is remembered fondly by his friends and family. What is so striking is, that he continues to affect lives still to this day. His name is emblazoned just behind the L1 door, just like Scott Kalitta, Jimbo Reese, Beti Ward and Mike Purins. I hope his name and memory will stay on this airplane with it’s new owner!
