During times of crisis or tragedy, I always feel the urge to jump into action offering support, whether it be tangible or emotional. I can remember thinking when the first shot was fired onto Ukraine, “the invasion has begun.” As the war raged on, I learned of thousands and thousands of individuals and families, many with pets, who were forced to abandon their homes with a single bag of their belongings. I kept wondering what I/we could do to help these Ukrainian citizens.

It was then that I saw a local quilt shop selling raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt that someone had made. That became my inspiration. I knew what I could do.

I put out feelers, wondering if anyone would even be interested in purchasing raffle tickets for a quilt. The response was overwhelming and empowered me to take action. So I  went to the store and purchased fabrics and supplies for the quilt. It has taken a while, but this labor of love is finally complete and ready for its new owner.

The quilt measures 73”x88” and is created with colors reflecting Ukraine….blue for the beautiful skies, and yellow/gold representing the wheat that flourishes in the country. The batting is 100% wool, which will provide extra warmth and softness. And finally, the quilting stitches are in a sunflower design, reminding us not only about the beautiful countryside of Ukraine, but also serving as a symbol of peace, optimism, and the Ukraine resistance.

I will be donating 100% of the proceeds to AirBnB.org, an organization that, among other things, “gives people a place to call home in times of crisis.” Our donation will cover the cost of temporary accommodations to those who have had to flee their homes, and hopefully offer both moral and physical support to the brave citizens of Ukraine.

“Light will win over darkness.” -----Volodymyr Zelensky
