After graduating from West Point in 2005, he was deployed to Afghanistan where he was assigned to direct artillery as a fire support officer for an infantry company. Throughout his tour, Hines poured time and energy into civil affairs missions to improve local infrastructure. When he wasn’t in the field, he focused on securing toys and school supplies for the Afghan children. Lt. Hines’ rifle platoon were on patrol and searching for insurgents, who were setting off improvised explosive devices in the Dayshopan District, a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan. After his patrol located the enemy cell in the remote mountainous area of Baylough, a firefight ensued, and Lt. Hines was killed by small arms fire.
