In June of 1915, Joe Locatelli laid the foundation for a new hotel on Big Basin Highway in Boulder Creek. It first opened as a boarding house, the Italia Hotel, for use by the loggers working the surrounding hillsides.

The opening of a movie studio in Boulder Creek in the same year brought many people to the town, and the hotel prospered along with the movie business. The hotel was frequented by many of the stars of the time, including Wallace Beery, Tom Mix, Henry Fonda and Mary Pickford. **

During prohibition it became a well-known place to sample the output of the local stills.

After nearly 100 years, Scopazzi's continues to offer the finest Italian restaurant in the area, with an extensive wine list and a full lounge bar. Banquetting facilities are available for up to 200 people.

Local winemaker and Saison Hospitality Co-Founder & Beverage Director Mark Bright invites the Santa Cruz community to celebrate his new Scotts Valley wine bar and cellar space and preview its distinctive selection of local and global wines.




Saison Cellar & Wine Bar will offer a curated and deeply personal wine collection by Bright, with hyperlocal Santa Cruz Mountain AVA labels as well as a heavy focus on the wines of France. “My first travels as a sommelier took me to Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, where I found my life-long inspiration in the wine world,” says Bright, “but it was the diverse soil types and ocean-influenced climate of Santa Cruz that drove me to make wine myself.”




Along with a comfortable yet elevated wine bar experience, the space will provide unique wine storage opportunities and amenities to Saison Cellar Wine Club members. The front space will feature a mix of couches, dining tables, bar seating, and outdoor seating.  The back wall, awash in ‘Saison Blue’ displays a curated collection of bottles, each a favorite that Mark Bright has enjoyed and collected over the years. The bottle collection continues behind the bar and is displayed along with Bright’s wine-themed art portfolio, each piece with personal meaning to him. The cellar is lined with 30 custom-made wine storage lockers. It is a space for wine club members, wine education, visiting producer events, curated tastings, and special events (caviar and champagne anyone?). Reservations are not required but are available.

Mountain Farm and Feed's customers came from all walks of life. Old-timers with coveralls, young adults with nose rings and tattoos, parents with kids of all ages. Homesteaders, dreamers, retirees, students. They were drawn to the energy and the movement happening in the small mountain town, and they each held a piece of the intricate mosaic that was forming, not just in Ben Lomond, but globally.



There is a desire that runs deep, beneath disparate cultures and political views, for connection. It's a basic human need, a form of community. Connection to our neighbors and our families, to the food we eat and the places we inhabit. It was as though each customer that leaned on the counter to chat offered up a little thread, a piece of the web that was our community.



It has been our task here at Mountain Feed to gather those strands together and weave a kind of web, a vision that encompasses not only the inhabitants of this valley, but one that reaches out beyond the edges of our small community, to connect to the larger culture beyond. Having started small (remember those cells!), we have grown organically, in response to customer feedback.
