THE THEATRE
Founded in 2006, Hattiloo's plays shift inaccuracies around Black identity, while showcasing the best that Black theatre has to offer. Most of these plays are written by accomplished playwrights like Pulitzer-Prize winners August Wilson and Susan-Lori Parks, as well as Memphis’ own Katori Hall. These shows transcend their entertainment value by being a resource for local Black actors and directors to hone their talents and further develop their resumes and/or curriculum vitae.

Hattiloo’s presence and efforts have been vital in helping establish a more equitable arts environment in Shelby County. For 15 years, it has served as a beacon of cultural progress in Tennessee, as it challenges common misconceptions of what it means to be Southern and Black.

THE IMPACT
While youth need to develop the fundamentals of theatre, increased public examinations of racism make it necessary for appropriate coping mechanisms to be included in their learning. So, Hattiloo’s programs for youth focus on theatre as both art and therapy.

Hattiloo provides children with content that’s relative to their lives, in an environment that echoes their background. Its programs include Hattiloo Youth Theatre, Hattiloo at the Library (free show followed by a talkback and a hands-on activity) and TechiLoo (free workshops in sewing costumes, prop making, and scenic painting).
