Have you ever felt like you were losing a part of yourself, one day at a time? That’s how I’ve felt since Easter weekend of 2024, when my world turned upside down. I never imagined that a sudden illness would lead me down this road—a journey of pain, uncertainty, and countless obstacles. Writing this letter is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but I’m reaching out because I believe in the power of community, compassion, and hope.
Since that fateful weekend, my health has deteriorated in ways I could never have imagined. I was diagnosed with severe gastroparesis, a condition that left my stomach paralyzed and unable to function. By August, the only option left was surgery to remove most of my stomach. While I hoped this would bring relief, my journey only became more complicated. I’ve since been diagnosed with dysautonomia, causing severe cardiac symptoms, and dysphagia, which has left me unable to swallow solids or liquids. Most days, I can only manage a few bites of safe foods, and my body has withered under the strain—I’ve lost more than 100 pounds and even much of my hair.
The financial strain has been overwhelming. Since August 2024, my husband and I have taken on over $20,000 in debt trying to cover my medical bills, surgeries, and treatments. We’ve tried everything, but the challenges just keep mounting. My doctors now tell me that the best hope lies with the experts at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Being accepted there feels like a lifeline, but the cost of travel, lodging, and additional treatment is beyond what we can manage on our own.
